Joint venture to improve access to higher education for local students, and provide preparation for university and early-career success

California State University (CSU) Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani, Ph.D., and Modesto Junior College (MJC) President Gaither Loewenstein, Ph.D, formally announced a joint venture to create the Turlock Educational Center on the CSU Stanislaus campus. The center will play an important role in preparing students to succeed in university-level classes and compete for early-career opportunities.

“This is a historic moment for CSU Stanislaus, as we partner with Modesto Junior College to offer Turlock and the surrounding community vocational and English as a Second Language courses not currently available at the university” said CSU Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani. “Our shared site will allow us to work together to better serve the community and region, and will open up opportunities for future collaboration.”

“We are delighted to initiate what we hope will be a productive, long-standing partnership with California State University, Stanislaus, that is geared toward promoting the success of college students from the Turlock community,” said Modesto Junior College President Gaither Loewenstein.

Two state-of the-art, energy-efficient modular classrooms—each accommodating approximately 40 students—will be constructed on the CSU Stanislaus campus near the corner of W. Monte Vista Ave. and Geer Rd. The project will be funded with $900,000 in Measure E bond monies approved by voters in November 2004. Site planning and construction approvals are scheduled for completion in March 2011. The current project timeline will allow instruction at the Turlock Education Center to begin in fall 2011.
